Back in the nineties when companies were just starting to encourage consumers to visit their websites, I saw www.tampax.com on tv and thought it was the funniest thing I’d ever seen. Why would anyone go to the tampax website? Okay, so I just did. I wanted to see what the line of reasoning is for the rounded “comfort” tip on some applicator tampons – really just a circle of little plastic or cardboard tabs that stick up off the top to give the illusion of a less-blunt tip but really just makes it look more like a penis, which is surely comforting to those young first-time tampon users at whom this feature is aimed. The main problem is that the tabs have an unfortunate tendency to catch and bend backwards, essentially becoming a tiny cement trowel poking you in the crotch, or worse, biopsying your walls. Seriously, unless you have some sort of remote vagina viewing equipment, the chances of having perfect aim without doing a little bit of poking around are few, and thus the chances of painful scrapings are good. No wonder I have friends who are terrifed of tampons at age 30. I know, we should all be using applicator-less tampons or diva cups or unbleached cotton diapers but sometimes I just want the cardboard tube. It’s like frozen pizza – lazy but comforting.

It’s not just tampax; everyone offers this feature. My wannabe hippie unbleached cotton tampons have it too.

In the extensive research I put into this post in the last fifteen minutes, I also found this patent. I think we can all agree this is just wrong. It’s the Hummer limo of tampons. That’s what the blood’s for, people!
